The GCTA Supports Tennis
Our tennis community lost a great person: Dr. Robert K. Bowen.
Dr. Robert K. Bowen, 79, passed October 11th, 2003 at the Kobacker House following a brief
illness at the James Cancer Hospital. Born April 9, 1924 in Martin's Ferry, OH to Frank W. and
Laura Francis Bowen. He graduated from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1948.
He helped the Buckeye Basketball team advance to the Final Four NCAA championships in 1944 and
1945. He was also an Ohio State Varsity Tennis Player. He was a member of Romophos, Bucket
and Dipper, and Sphinx honoraries and Psi Omega Dental Fraternity. He served as a Lieutenant
in the US Naval Dental Core from 1950 to 1952. He practiced dentistry at 1896 N. High Street
for 41 years. Member of the Ohio Dental Association, the American Dental Association, member
of the International College of Dentistry, the American College of Dentistry, and Pierre
Fauchard Academy. He served on the Ohio Dental Board and the Northeast Regional Dental Board
for 28 years. Past member of the Lion's Club, founding member of the Upper Arlington Rotary
International, President of the Ohio Valley Tennis Association, member of Varsity O, and received
an Ohio State Distinguished Dental Alumni Award. Before becoming active in the congregation of
the First Community, he served as Lay Leader at King Ave. United Methodist Church for 17 years.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Laurel; sons, Dr. Richard W. (Sandy) Bowen, Robert
B. (Dixie) Bowen, Dr. Donald F. (Janet) Bowen; sister, Marjorie (Bob) Reeder; and nine
grandchildren, Bryan, Barry, Taryn, Laura, Theresa, Maggie, Scott, David, and Jon.
Private family internment service, Union Cemetery. Service of memory will be held Wednesday,
October 15, 2003, 1 p.m., at First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Blvd. Family will receive
friends following the service. Reverend Jim Long officiating. In lieu of flowers, friends may
contribute to Hospice at Riverside/Grant, 3595 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, OH 43214.
