by Les Varnado to file the treasurer’s report for audit and Fran McCabe

4. Junior Wightman Cup & Junior Davis Cup
Marni Nordstrom and Mike Uretsky will again coach the Jr Wightman Cup
and Davis Cup respectively. Marni announced that we will be represented
by the area’s finest juniors. The Davis Cup and Wightman Cup will begin
the weekend of July 16th.
5. Women’s Leagues
Mary Sims reported 1,878 women have registered to play in the women’s
leagues this summer. There are 143 teams which is up a little from last
year. Mary has collected approximately $15,000. The Champ of Champs Tournament
is scheduled for August 9th and 10th, with the finals being held on August
15th. The tournament will be held at various sites around the city.
6. Men’s Leagues
Jeff Johnston reported that the men began play the last weekend of
May. The number of participants is equivalent to last year but there are
fewer top level players. The Champ of Champs Tournament will be held September
25th and 26th at Scioto Country Club.
7. Mixed Leagues
Due to lack of interest and a chairperson the mixed league was dropped.
8. OVTA
Gary Alexander reported there is $10,000 to $20,000 in grants available
from the Ohio Valley Tennis Association for programs. He should be contacted
if anyone is interested. The deadline is early January 2000 for submission
to the OVTA for next year. Jeff Johnston asked whether or not the Ohio
districts would become one statewide district. Gary stated the Midwest
Section wanted to change the state districts but nothing has been set.
Les Varnado did not believe this would happen soon because there are many
issues to consider first.
9. Umpires
Kim Forman reported that 24 people attended the last umpire school
and although this was a good turnout, more umpires are needed. Volunteers
are needed for the Adult District playoff held July 30th thru August 1st
at the Ohio State University.
10. Parks and Recreation
Connie Everhart introduced Amy Worley, the coordinator for the city
tennis programs. Connie reported that 50 children between the ages 9 to
14 participated in the Tennis Blitz held the third week of June. Overall
80 adults and 406 children under the age of 16 have signed up for their
programs. A Regional Rally will be held at the Stickney Center beginning
July 28th. She anticipates 100 participants. Anyone with used balls and
equipment that they wish to donate to the city programs should contact
Connie.
11. Area and District Qualifier
Billie Meadors reported 290 players participated this year. Billie
thanked the umpires for volunteering their time. New chairs will be needed
for the year 2000. Billie Meadors and Rita Johansen resigned as chairs
but offered guidance and help to the new chairs. Carol thanked Rita and
Billie for their years of volunteering to run the qualifier.
Carol reported that the district qualifier was a full draw. She thanked
Connie Splawnyk for her help as well as Alice Scott for refereeing. All
went well even though a tennis camp was being held at the courts at the
same time.
12. USTA Junior Team Tennis
Tim Thomas has set a goal of 2000 entries by the year 2000.
13. Southeast Open Tournament
A letter of resignation was received from Les and Carol Veranda. Les
thanked the GCTA for their financial support over the past 12 years. Plaques,
pictures and memorabilia from the past 12 years will be turned over to
the GCTA. Les stated, “this tournament provided a great deal of good will
for the GCTA.” The newspapers provided very good coverage. In the past
Groveport High School and most recently Reynoldsburg High School donated
court time for this tournament. The used tournament balls were donated
to Reynoldsburg High School for their programs.
14. Awards Ceremony
The ceremony has been set for Sunday, September 26th from 4:00 to 6:00
pm. Refreshments will be served outside the building, weather permitting.
This year we will also honor outstanding juniors. Gary Alexander and Les
Varnado suggested we give an award to someone in the area of publicity.
Someone who has best promoted tennis. Les felt Brian Rapp would be a worthy
recipient based on his many articles covering tennis. Janet will put a
committee together to select award recipients.
15. Wheelchair Tennis
Theresa Fourney has moved out of state and will not be running the
tournament. Janet Craycraft will try to reach Kim Martin or John Daly to
check on who will be taking over the tournament. The tournament was scheduled
to be held August 25th and 26th.
16. Old Business
Andy Alexander reported $4,600 has been spent on the Tennis Blitz for
the Tennis 1, 2, 3 program. $5,000 was given by the USTA. The TIA (Tennis
Industry Association) paid for advertising. The Blitz was held at 27 clubs
and/or sites around the city. The area clubs seemed pleased with the program.
Scarborough and Groveport High School in particular did a super job. Andy
is having trouble getting required reports from all the sites. The grant
for next year is based on how we did this year.
Connie Everhart mentioned that Rosemont School for Girls called to
inquire about lessons. She will check on how that could be accomplished
and get back to us.
Fran McCabe wanted to know what monetary figure we will give each adult
team for districts. After much discussion regarding the number of entries
and costs anticipated, a motion to increase the budget to $3,500 to cover
adult district entry fees was made by Jake Will, Jr., and seconded by Jeff
Johnston. Motion passed.
17. New Business
Les Varnado suggested the GCTA should consider a web site. He felt
helpful information could be available to the tennis community. The problem
is to find someone to design and maintain the web page. It was suggested
that an article be placed in the upcoming newsletter requesting a volunteer.
Respectfully submitted,
Janet Craycraft
