Southeast Open Tennis Tournament:
Director Les Varnado reports a disappointing turnout for this year's
tournament. Despite more publicity, there were fewer entries. Les's good
news, there is a modest profit to report. Not playing indoors, despite
the rain, helped the final tally. Les encouraged all of the board members
to participate next year.
Awards Ceremony:
Les Varnado is planning another festive evening Sunday, September 28th
in the Upper Arlington Municipal Building from 7-9 PM. Refreshments and
a photographer are in place and Les hopes for a successful turnout. President
Doug Snapp extends a note of thanks to Les for all of his hard work with
organizing this event.
Wheelchair Tennis Clinic and Championships:
Doug introduces Kim Martin and Teresa Fournier from OSU Wheelchair
Tennis. OSU will sponsor a Wheelchair Tennis Camp at the OSU Stickney Tennis
Courts on July 12th and 13th. July 18-20th, OSU is hosting a Wheelchair
Tennis Tournament. Kim and Teresa want to promote wheelchair tennis as
a lifelong sport. GCTA will be providing lots of help for both events.
Doug Snapp will feed balls for the camp's clinic while Ralph Walton is
providing ball boys and Kim Forman is helping with umpires for the tournament.
Kim and Teresa asked the GCTA Board if they would be willing to sponsor
a Sunday lunch for the tournament in the amount of $200-$400.00. After
discussion, Mark Vannatta makes a motion to fund a lunch and Fran McCabe
seconds. Jake Will amends the motion to include the amount up to $400.00.
After more discussion, Jake withdraws his motion. Jake then motions to
provide a lunch for the amount of $500.00. Mark Vannatta seconds. Doug
Snapp calls for a vote from the board. All are in favor and the motion
passes.
Junior Team Tennis:
Tim Thomas tells the Board that over 400 children from 14 clubs are
participating in this summer's program. The response and feedback have
been overwhelming. The two levels are satellite and challenger with three
40 minute round robins. Next year Tim hopes to have over 700 kids involved.
Volunteers are welcome. Doug Snapp expresses his concern regarding the
lack of involvement from our Columbus Parks children. Next year, Doug added,
these kids will be included.
Play Tennis America:
Doug Snapp explains to the Board how this program is run by the Tennis
Industry. Columbus had some money coming from the Tennis Industry for media
support. Unfortunately, the Industry pulled the majority of the money due
to the low participation in our area.
Junior Wightman and Junior Davis Cup:
Coach Marni Nordstrom prepares her team for their annual Springfield,
Ohio round robin. They depart this weekend. Marni reports that her 9 member
team is very deep and they expect some exciting results. Mike Uretsky will
head this summer's Junior Davis Cup team.
Women's Leagues:
Director Mary Sims reports 139 teams are participating in league play
this summer. The women have 1800 members with an income of $15,000. The
Champ of Champions will be played August 11th and 12th with the finals
on August 17th.
Men's Leagues:
Jeff Johnston reports participation is the same as last year. No problems
to report. Jeff is still working on a site for the men's Champ of Champions.
Mixed Doubles Leagues:
Director Mark Vannatta tells the Board no complaints to report and
everything is going well with 17 teams participating. Mark suggested playing
all of the Champ of Champions finals together.
OVTA:
Secretary Gwen Dulin reports they are preparing for USTA league play
in Charleston, West Virginia. Gwen questioned whether GCTA pays for the
entries to Charleston for the Columbus teams. The OVTA will send out a
a newsletter in August. Any information is welcome. OVTA was asked by the
Western Tennis Association to conduct a tennis survey. Gwen commended Doug
Snapp on the superior job he did in taking and writing this survey.
Umpires:
Kim Forman reports the umpires provided coverage for the Big Bear Tennis
Challenge in New Albany. The umpires will participate in the Wheelchair
Tennis Tournament.
Parks and Recreation:
Connie Everhart tells the Board they are running 9 sites for the 6-8
year old Pee Wee's. Five sites host the CRPD Junior Team Tennis, while
the NJTL is held at 24 sites. Adult lessons are also on the rise with 4
sites participating. June 13 was the NJTL kickoff, held in conjunction
with the Big Bear Tennis Challenge. Tennis professional John Kriek directed
the clinic for over 100 kids. The Columbus Recreation and Parks Dept. applied
for the Excellence in Tennis Award with the National Parks Programs. Connie
added the HMO Tennis Tournament is taking registration. This summer's tournament
will have a wheelchair division.
Area and District Qualifier:
Area Chair Carol Alexander reports the Girls 16's Districts tournament
was held June 14-18th at the OSU Stickney Tennis Center. Due to a full
draw, alternates were not admitted. The finals were played indoors due
to the rain. Carol thanked Jim Hendrix and all of her committee for their
hard work. The financial statement for the tournament is incomplete due
to complications with the Touch Tone Tennis.
Women's Winter Tennis:
Sharon Rusk and Mary Sims recommend moving the tennis parties to an
earlier date for next year.
Big Bear Challenge:
Doug Snapp reported on GCTA's participation in the event. He was disappointed
that there wasn't more involvement on the part of the GCTA. He thanks his
son for working with the communications people at the tournament. He got
their fax machine and computers working much more efficiently. He thanked
his wife for coordinating the ushers. Thanks to Doug and Andy Alexander
and others for all of the phone calls they made recruiting volunteers.
Doug suggested starting volunteer sign-up much earlier.
Old Business:
Treasurer Brooks Naffziger expressed concern over the $46,000 in our
savings account. Brooks entertained a motion to appoint a financial committee
to investigate ways of investing this money. Jake Will seconds and the
motions passes. Connie Everhart thanks Andy Alexander for his continued
support to the CRPD for donating thousands of tennis balls every year.
Connie welcomes everyone's donations.
New Business:
Doug Snapp announces the formation of the Budget and Nominating committees.

Jake Will moves to adjourn the meeting. Sharon Rusk seconds and the
