GCTA Board Minutes

The Greater Columbus Tennis Association Board of Trustees meeting was held Thursday, January 16, 1997, at Swim and Racquet Club. President Doug Snapp called the meeting to order at 7:40 PM.
In Attendance: Jean A. Shaw, Carol Alexander, Joe Gordon, Mary Sims, John Daly, Gary Alexander, Andy Alexander, Jake Will, Fran McCabe, Doug Snapp, Brooks Naffziger, Kim Forman, Jim Hendrix, Bud Petersen, Les Varnado, Jr.
Approval of Minutes:
President Doug Snapp calls for a motion to accept the September 1996 minutes as presented. Brooks Naffziger moves to accept and Fran McCabe seconds. The motion passes with a voice vote.
Treasurer's Report:
Treasurer Brooks Naffziger presents his report to the Board showing a cash balance of $14,532.08, deposits of $3,130.68, and disbursements of $6,737.53. The balance in checking remains $11,225.23, balance in the Southeast Open checking is $300 and the money market flex-fund is $21,969.38. The total cash balance is $33,494.61. Gary Alexander moves to accept the report, Bud Petersen seconds and the motion passes.
Junior Wightman Cup and Junior Davis Cup:
Gary Alexander reports that Marni Nordstrom has agreed to coach the Wightman Cup team another year. Craig Caruso should continue to serve as Junior Davis Cup coach.
Women's Leagues:
Mary Sims introduces herself to the Board as the 1997 Women's Chair.
Men's Leagues:
Jeff Johnston will continue as league coordinator but is looking for an assistant. Their initial mailing will go out mid-March with a captains' meeting to follow. There was some discussion into a rating data base.
Mixed Doubles Leagues:
Mark Vannatta will continue another season as the league coordinator.
OVTA:
Carol Alexander reports the annual meeting was held November 3rd at Scioto Country Club. Jim Hendrix, Les Varnado, Gary Alexander, Andy Alexander, and Carol were in attendance. Many awards were presented. The next meeting will be held in Chillicothe March 14th and 15th and all are welcome. Carol also reported the Girls 16's Districts will again be held here from June 14th to the 17th. Carol will chair this tournament another year.
Umpires:
Kim Forman reports the umpires training school will be held here sometime soon. Kim emphasized the need for more umpires. Some of our local umpires will be traveling to Kentucky for updating on their certification.
Parks and Recreation:
Connie Everhart will continue to run the tennis programs for another year. Jim Hendrix reports he received a $7,500 grant from the USTA to begin a USTA program entitled Play Tennis America. Jim explains the details of this beginner tennis program for juniors and adults. It begins with instruction and ends with league play. Fran McCabe informed the Board that Olympic Tennis Club has been participating in the program. All participants pay a nominal fee for instruction. Andy Alexander adds that this program has been successful wherever it has been held. Gary Alexander suggests more research.
Area and District Qualifier:
Gary Alexander tells the Board that Janet Craycraft and her committee have agreed to run this year's tournament. The qualifier will be held in May.
Women's Winter Tennis:
No dates for the parties have been scheduled.
Southeast Open Tennis Tournament:
Tournament Director Les Varnado will hold his USTA sanctioned tournament June 1st to the 8th at Reynoldsburg High School. It will be an 18 event tournament. Les explained that there will not be any Touch Tone sign-up available for entries. We congratulate Les for his hard work and success in running his tournament for this, his 10-year anniversary. Les donates all of the tournament's proceeds to the GCTA.
Big Bear Tennis Challenge:
President Doug Snapp reports he met with Bill Hennessey from the Big Bear Tennis Challenge. Bill is interest in involving the GCTA. We would coordinate ushers and ticket selling. There would be incentive offered to us.
Awards Ceremony:
Chair Les Varnado reports the Awards Ceremony was held Sunday, September 29th at the Upper Arlington Municipal Building. Les presented his financial report to the Board. With a budget of $1,000, the cost of the programs was $132, food was $212.50, and the photographer's expenses were $158.63: totaling $503.13. Les was pleased with the outcome of the evening. This year's Awards Ceremony will be held Sunday, September 28th at the Upper Arlington Municipal Building. Doug Snapp added that he would like to see an increase in attendance. Doug suggested more publicity. Gary Alexander suggested spotlighting a local tennis celebrity; this might bring out more people. Les Varnado suggested presenting media awards for outstanding tennis coverage. Les would also like the Board to add the Suburban Newspapers to our mailing list. There was discussion about changing the awards given to participants.
Newsletter:
Doug Snapp will research the best time and way to issue our newsletter.
New Business:
Brooks Naffziger would like to establish a financial group with the Board to research our investment potential.
John Daly discussed the OSU tennis center becoming more of a club.
Adjournment:
President Doug Snapp entertains the motion to adjourn the meeting. Kim Forman moves to adjourn, Fran McCAbe seconds and the meeting adjourns.
