1. Call to order
President, Doug Snapp, called the meeting to order.
2. Approval of minutes
Doug asked for a motion to approve the January minutes. The motion
was seconded. The minutes were approved as written.
3. Treasurer’s report
Treasurer, Jake Will, Jr., distributed copies of his report, showing
total assets of $79,865.
4. Junior Wightman Cup & Junior Davis Cup
Doug Snapp announced that to his knowledge Marni Nordstrom and Mike
Uretsky will again coach the Wightman Cup and Davis Cup teams.
5. Women’s Leagues
Women's League Chair, Mary Sims, announced a preliminary count of 142
teams. There were 139 teams least year. Their organizational meeting will
be held Friday, May 15, at the Upper Arlington Municipal Building.
6. Men’s Leagues
Jeff Johnston gave the final weekend of May as the starting time for
the Men's Leagues.
7. Mixed Leagues
The possibility of having the USTA mixed leagues become a part of the
GCTA summer leagues was discussed. The program, with a minimum of four
and a maximum of 10 people was known as World Team Tennis. It was played
at Olympic, Wickertree and the Racquet Club--both doubles and singles in
a 6 game pro set format with no-ad scoring. Doug asked Mixed Chair, Phil
Davis, to get a format going.
8. OVTA
Carol Alexander, Area Chair, announced the next OVTA meeting for May
3 at the Trueman Club Hotel. Davis Cup and Wightman Cup schedules will
be distributed, as will tournament packets for the junior qualifiers and
district tournaments. The Girls' 16 District will again be held in Columbus.
9. Columbus Parks and Recreation
Connie Everhart reported 24 NJTL (National Junior Tennis League) park
sites. There is a need in the Whitehall and Grove City areas. Health Power
will sponsor the adult tournament July 13-26. Junior Team Tennis will have
4 or 5 teams. These teams generated sufficient USTA memberships last year
to raise the Columbus junior quota from 11 to 14 players to the districts.
Connie thanked everyone for the racquets and balls. Her department will
be employing teachers for 20-22 hours Monday-Thursday divided into 6 weeks
of 2 hour lessons. Proposals for grants from the MidWest Tennis and the
USTA can now be submitted. CRC (Community Recreation Committee--which the
GCTA supports financially) fund raising was discussed.
10. Champ of Champions tournament dates were announced for August 10-11
with the finals August 16th. Doug urged that the tournament be publicized
as an important event.
11. Southeast Open Tournament
Les Varnado handed out applications for the Southeast Open, Jun 7-14,
at Reynoldsburg High School and urged everyone present at the meeting to
participate.
12. Awards
Les also announced the GCTA awards presentation for Sunday, September
27th, from 7-9 p.m. at the Upper Arlington Municipal Building. Mary Sims
suggested that each team be given the picture taken that evening along
with the negative for copies for team members.
13. Old Business
Gary Alexander emphasized the importance of USTA memberships.
14. Adjournment
There was a motion for adjournment, 2nd, and it passed.
